These projects have been selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving uninsured or underinsured women in our service area. Please note that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is not a direct service provider.
Crawford County Health Department - Pittsburg $10,250
Funding for local breast cancer support groups, the 12th annual breast cancer awareness candlelight vigil, and assistance in reducing the financial barriers preventing women from having their annual mammogram.
E.C. Tyree Health Clinic - Wichita $23,425
This outreach program, “Circle of Friends” will focus on the participants perspective and how to reach them and change their mindset about self examinations and annual visits to the doctor for mammograms. The program will also focus on how to education others on the importance of breast health within the women’s Circle of Friends.
Hays Cancer Center $24,113
Breast Health Patient Navigator will provide education and comprehensive care for rural women in Western Kansas at high risk for breast cancer including breast health recommendations, lifestyle, cancer risk and genetics.
Junction City/Geary County Health Department $33,000
This grant will provide breast health screenings, mammograms/follow-on referrals, and breast cancer prevention education to 3000 African American women in Geary County.
Kansas Department of Health and Environment - Statewide $196,311
Early Detection Works Program Screening Enhancement The KDHE Early Detection Works Program (EDW) provides
Breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic services to women between the ages of 40-64 who meet income and
insurance guidelines.
Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center - Pittsburg $13,868
“Wellness on Wheels” is a mobile unit to provide convenient opportunities for mammograms, clinical breast exams, and education, with the goal of increasing screening for African American, Hispanic, and uninsured women in Kansas.
Tammy Walker Cancer Center - Salina $32,849
Patient Navigator for a 13 county region in North Central Kansas. The PN will provide rural women with education about breast health, cancer screening, and facilitate comprehensive cancer treatment.
The Witness Project of Kansas - Wichita $16,920
African American community-based breast cancer education outreach program using African American volunteer cancer survivors and community lay health advisors. Purpose of grant is the education African American women, helping them through the heath care system, enrolling more women in the Early Detection Works program, and ultimately lowering the continuing rising African American breast cancer mortality rate in Kansas.
United Methodist Mexican American Ministries – Garden City $31,000
Screening mammography and ultrasounds for women under the age of 50 who are medically underserved. The program targets Hispanic women in Western Kansas. There will be an educational component and survivor support program, as well.
2011 Komen Mid-Kansas Small Grant Recipients ($3,000 and under)
Clay County Health Department $1,845
The purpose of this grant is to plan, organize and promote breast health care and mammography throughout Clay County by inviting women of all ages to events centered around a presentation entitled Stopping the Inevitable: Breast Cancer and Genetics.
Ellsworth County Medical Center $3,000
This outreach program provides community awareness of breast cancer, screening guidelines and promotes the positive thought that breast cancer can be eliminated. This grant will provide education to five communities in Ellsworth County.
Flint Hills Community Health Center $1,510
This outreach program works to promote the Early Detection Works Program (which provides screening to women without insurance in Kansas) and seeks to educate women in Lyon County about breast Health awareness.
It’s About Me Breast Cancer Awareness Association $3,000
This grant will support the organization’s eighth annual women’s health expo and luncheon for women in Geary County. The expo promotes health education to all individuals interested in or who have been impacted by breast cancer.
