Komen Mid-Kansas Thanks Supporters

Dear Komen Supporter ,

By now, I am sure you all have heard the recent controversy surrounding Susan G. Komen and the subsequent amendment of the grant funding criteria policy.  I want to assure you that nothing has changed these past few days as far as the funding for breast cancer services throughout the 95 counties that we serve in Kansas.  Komen Mid-Kansas is dedicated to serving the breast health needs of all women, men and families regardless of age, race, gender, or socioeconomic status.  Our top priority is to continue to fund breast screenings, education, community outreach and research, as we have for 22 years.

Currently Komen Mid-Kansas provides $390,000 in funding to  13 programs in the 95 counties that we serve.  This year we plan to grant over $500,000.  You can view our current grantees on our website at the grants tab.  We select our grant programs based on the specific needs of the communities we serve.  We conduct a Community Profile on the state of breast health in our counties every other year and re-evaluate the need and gaps in service across the state to better serve those affected by this disease.  The Mid-Kansas Affiliate has never funded Planned Parenthood.  They have never applied to us for funds.

75% of the net funds raised by Komen Mid-Kansas stay in Kansas to fund our annual grant program.  The other 25% is sent to Headquarters for the Komen Award and Research Grant Program which funds research on a national level.  More than 100% of the money that we have sent to Komen Headquarters for research programs has returned to Kansas in the form of research grants.

With your continued support Komen Mid-Kansas looks forward to continuing our fight against breast cancer as we serve the women, men and families of our 95 counties.  We are working every day to save lives and create a future where breast cancer is no longer a threat to life.  We hope that you will continue your support of Komen Mid-Kansas.   We have had more requests for service this year than ever before so your continued support is essential to our mission.  Join us at Cards for the Cure, our no limit Texas Holdem Tournament on March 30-31, 2012 at the Wichita Hyatt Regency Hotel and at the Wichita Race for the Cure, Saturday, September 29th, 2012.

Sincerely,

Lindsay Smith
